School maintenance requires 46,551 million pesos annually says Mexicanos Primero
The organization Mexicanos Primero has called on deputies to prioritize the 2025 education budget, emphasizing a deficit of 46,551 million pesos annually for the maintenance of basic and upper secondary schools in Mexico. This appeal comes as the November 15 deadline for the Federal Executive to deliver the 2025 economic package approaches, with deputies having until December 15 to analyze and approve it.
As part of their #ÉchaleunOjo al presupuesto campaign, Mexicanos Primero highlighted that maintaining schools should be a priority to ensure quality education for children, adolescents, and young adults. The organization’s study estimates that this amount, 46,551 million pesos annually, is necessary for basic maintenance, which includes tasks like painting, waterproofing, repairing hydraulic and sanitary installations, and renewing electrical systems.
Broken down, this figure equates to 226,232 pesos per school, or 1,809 pesos per student per year, which translates to about 181 pesos per month per student. Mexicanos Primero warned that infrastructure investments would be wasted without continuous maintenance to prevent situations where bathrooms or facilities fall into disrepair or become unusable.
In addition to regular maintenance, the organization also stressed the need for major maintenance every five years to ensure the durability of the school infrastructure. However, the projected amount does not include the maintenance of computer equipment, internet access, or the costs of electricity and water, due to insufficient data on consumption.
Proper maintenance, according to Mexicanos Primero, is crucial to prevent accidents caused by electrical or structural failures. The organization emphasized that the issue of investment in public schools is not just financial but also a matter of political and social priorities, urging the need for educational policies that ensure quality education, particularly for students in socially disadvantaged areas.
