Softball: Titans Upended by Temple City
The San Marino softball team faced a challenging start to April, heading into spring break with two disappointing results. The Titans began the month with a nonleague matchup against Corona High on April 1, followed by a Rio Hondo League showdown against Temple City on April 4.
In their game against Corona, the Titans suffered a heavy defeat, falling 13-2 in just five innings. The struggles continued against Temple City, where San Marino dropped their fourth consecutive game, losing 17-3 in six innings.
During the match against Temple City, the Titans managed to stay competitive, trailing by only three runs at one point. However, the Rams exploded for 11 runs in the sixth inning, triggering the mercy rule.
Key performances for the Titans included senior Elizabeth Esbenshade, who drove in two runs, and junior Lily Mata, who doubled and finished the game 2-for-3. Sophomore Sarah Esbenshade scored twice and went 1-for-2, while freshman Elaine Hou contributed with a base hit. Additionally, sophomore Madeline Bilvado scored once for the Titans.
On the pitching side, Bilvado threw three innings, striking out five while walking three and allowing three hits, resulting in six runs (five earned). Freshman Kylie Lei pitched 2 1/3 innings, recording one strikeout and six walks, while Sarah Esbenshade pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.
In their earlier nonleague game against Corona, Bilvado and Mata each drove in a run, with senior Kayla Giddings going 2-for-3 with a double. Freshman Norah Parker also contributed with a hit, joining Bilvado and Sarah Esbenshade. Mata finished the game 2-for-2, and freshman Kayla Wu scored a run.
Parker pitched 2 2/3 innings against Corona, striking out six, walking five, and allowing one hit and two unearned runs. Bilvado also took the mound, striking out one and walking four while scattering five hits in 1 1/3 innings.
The Titans will look to bounce back when they return to action on April 15, resuming Rio Hondo League play on the road against Monrovia. They will host La Cañada the following day on April 16 before facing Alhambra in a nonleague matchup on April 19.
