Southampton School to Build New Specialist Classroom for Children with SEND
St Patrick's Catholic Primary School in Southampton is planning to build a new modular classroom dedicated to teaching children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The new classroom will provide a purpose-built space for children with SEND, allowing the school to better cater to their needs and improve their educational experience.
The school currently has a dedicated team of staff teaching children with SEND in a former music and drama room, known as the "Shamrock Room" provision. However, this space is also used by other children for interventions, therapy, and other support, which can compromise the teaching and learning experience for all students.
The school has identified a need for a new classroom due to the increasing number of children with SEND and the lack of available space in the school. The design and access statement submitted with the planning application highlights the "crisis" in provision for children with severe SEND in Southampton, with mainstream schools having to find creative solutions to accommodate these students.
Benefits of the New Classroom
The new classroom will provide a number of benefits, including:
1. A purpose-built space for children with SEND, allowing for more effective teaching and learning
2. Improved facilities for children with SEND, including an internal toilet facility
3. The ability to revert the existing "Shamrock Room" to its former music and drama use, benefiting the wider school community
4. Additional education resource on an existing school site, helping Southampton City Council to fulfill its responsibility to provide school places
The planning application for the new classroom was approved by Southampton City Council planning officers under delegated powers. The report by the planning case officer noted that the proposal would facilitate an additional education resource on an existing school site, which will help the council to fulfill its responsibility to provide school places.
