Sudan Hold Ghana To A Draw In AFCON Qualifier
Ghana and Sudan played out a goalless draw in their AFCON qualifier on matchday three, with Sudan's goalkeeper Mustafa emerging as the hero of the match. Despite Ghana’s relentless attacks, Mustafa's incredible performance between the posts kept the Black Stars from scoring and secured a crucial point for Sudan.
Ghana dominated from the start, pressing Sudan hard while playing at home in Accra. The likes of Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, and Jordan Ayew led Ghana’s offense, constantly creating chances, but Mustafa’s sharp goalkeeping kept them at bay. Ghana repeatedly came close to scoring, forcing the Sudanese keeper to make several stunning saves.
Sudan, meanwhile, played a disciplined defensive game, absorbing Ghana's pressure and waiting for counter-attacking chances. However, Ghana's defense held firm, limiting Sudan’s opportunities. The Sudanese strategy relied heavily on Mustafa’s ability to frustrate Ghana’s forward line.
As the second half progressed, Ghana increased the pressure, pinning Sudan deep into their own half. Kamaldeen Sulemana caused problems for Sudan’s backline with his pace and dribbling, while Thomas Partey controlled the midfield with precise passes. Yet, Mustafa’s acrobatics continued to deny Ghana.
Ghana’s best chance came in the 80th minute when Kudus struck from close range after receiving a clever pass from Ayew. But Mustafa reacted quickly, making a remarkable save that left Ghanaian fans in disbelief.
In the end, despite Ghana's dominance in possession and numerous chances, the match finished 0-0, with Sudan celebrating the result as a victory. Assistant coach Ignatius Fosu praised Sudan’s defense for their resilience. Ghana, however, was left frustrated, knowing they were the better team but unable to overcome Mustafa’s heroic goalkeeping. The result leaves both teams sharing the points, with Ghana ruing a missed opportunity to take all three.
