Swiss Libraries Recorded Over 46 Million Visits Last Year
Public libraries across Switzerland attracted 46.3 million visits last year, marking a significant increase of 7.4 million compared to 2022, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). Despite this surge in attendance, the number of active library users remained steady at 1.7 million.
Switzerland now boasts 1,498 libraries, a slight rise from 1,484 in the previous year. This equates to an average of 16.7 libraries per 100,000 residents, more than other cultural institutions such as museums or cinemas, highlighting the importance of libraries in Swiss cultural life.
In 2023, libraries across the country loaned out just over 40 million books and other media, a figure consistent with 2022. Beyond borrowing services, libraries also functioned as dynamic community spaces, hosting more than 79,000 events—a sharp increase from the 70,000 events recorded the previous year.
A Growing Cultural Hub
The rising number of visitors and events underscores libraries' evolving role in Swiss society, serving not just as repositories of knowledge but as hubs for social and cultural engagement. With their focus on accessibility and learning, Swiss libraries continue to play a vital role in promoting education, cultural exchange, and community cohesion.
This steady rise in engagement reflects a broader global trend of libraries reinventing themselves to remain relevant by offering diverse programs, workshops, and events alongside traditional lending services.
