The historical epic "Taghiyev. Oil" has achieved a significant milestone by captivating over 70,000 viewers since its release. Produced by the Baku Media Center with support from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Culture, and the Azerbaijan Film Agency, the film chronicles the life of Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, a pivotal figure in Azerbaijani history known for his philanthropic contributions and influence in shaping the nation.
This film is particularly special as it was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Taghiyev's passing, serving as a tribute to his enduring legacy in Azerbaijani society and his role in preserving national values. The production involved extensive efforts, with filming taking place across 76 locations and featuring around 2,500 extras. To authentically recreate 19th-century Baku, the team constructed over 300 sets and established a dedicated costume workshop that produced period-accurate clothing, jewelry, and accessories.
The creative team behind "Taghiyev. Oil" includes General Producer Arzu Aliyeva, Producer Orman Aliyev, Director Zaur Gasimli, and Screenplay Writers Ismail Iman, Asif Isgandarli, and Zaur Gasimli. The film's visual storytelling is enhanced by the work of Cinematographer Vladimir Artemiev, Production Designer Sabukhi Atababayev, Costume Designer Vusal Rahim, and Composer Etibar Asadli.
Set in 1888, the narrative unfolds as Baku prepares for the visit of Tsar Alexander III. Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, portrayed as a wealthy and influential figure, grapples with maintaining his societal status amidst political and personal challenges. The plot thickens as the city's mayor, Orlovsky, abuses his power to seize the oil plot of the late Teymurbayov, who tragically took his own life. Meanwhile, Haji's son, Ismail, finds himself in a romantic entanglement with Nurjahan Arablinskaya, the daughter of a high-ranking general, complicating the family's dynamics further.
The highly anticipated second part of this four-part saga, titled "Taghiyev. Tsar," is set to be released in CineMastercard cinemas starting in April, promising to continue the exploration of Taghiyev's life and legacy. The success of "Taghiyev. Oil" not only highlights the film's artistic achievements but also underscores the importance of storytelling in preserving and celebrating Azerbaijani history and culture.
