Taiwanese Heavy Metal Band Chthonic Showcased in Grammy Music Program
Chthonic a renowned Taiwanese metal quintet, has achieved a significant milestone by being featured on Global Spin, an esteemed program hosted on the Grammy Awards website. This platform serves as a gateway to introduce global music and artists to a wide audience. Chthonic captivated viewers with a mesmerizing live performance of their latest single, "Pattokan."
On May 2, Global Spin shared a captivating video of Chthonic's electrifying live performance at the renowned Megaport Festival held last month in Kaohsiung, a bustling city in southern Taiwan. The program praised the band's ability to seamlessly blend contemporary and traditional instruments, effectively uniting Taiwan's contrasting facets. Chthonic harmoniously fuses the nation's rich historical and mystical roots as the homeland of the Austronesian peoples with its vibrant and technologically advanced modern image.
Global Spin also shed light on the profound significance of "Pattokan." This track marks the band's first studio release since their 2018 album, "Battlefields of Asura," which was composed in honor of Uong'e Yatauyungana (高一生). Yatauyungana was an outspoken advocate for democracy who tragically lost his life during the White Terror repression. The song title itself, "Pattokan," is derived from Yatauyungana's final letter to his family, in which he mentioned Jade Mountain—a sacred location in Taiwan.
Expressing their gratitude, Doris Yeh (葉湘怡), a prominent member and the head of Chthonic, stated that the band is deeply honored to be prominently featured as heavy metal representatives in this renowned program. Freddy Lim (林昶佐), the lead vocalist of Chthonic and an independent legislator in Taiwan, expressed his hope that the video will effectively showcase the beauty of Kaohsiung and Taiwan to a global audience.
It is worth noting that Lim successfully retained his position as an independent legislator in Taipei's fifth electoral district during a recall election last year, as the number of votes in favor of the recall narrowly missed the required threshold.
