Team Ukraine to Compete in 2025 Invictus Games with Largest-Ever Delegation
Team Ukraine is set to make a significant impact at the 2025 Invictus Games, which officially began on February 8 in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada. This year, the team comprises 35 injured Ukrainian soldiers, marking the largest delegation from Ukraine to date. The athletes arrived in Canada on January 31 after six months of dedicated training.
Ukraine will kick off its participation by facing Colombia in the Group C Preliminary Round of wheelchair basketball, the first sport of the competition. The Invictus Games this year feature 550 athletes with disabilities, injuries, and illnesses from 25 different countries, competing across 11 sports, ranging from Alpine skiing to swimming.
The Ukrainian community in British Columbia and across Canada has expressed deep honor in welcoming Ukraine’s heroes to the Invictus Games. Natalka Jatskevich, Vice President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress West, emphasized the resilience and bravery of Ukrainian veterans, who have been defending their country against Russia’s aggression for three years.
Serhii Melnyk, Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister, highlighted the importance of Ukraine's participation in the games, stating, "This year's competition will provide further chances to demonstrate to the world the indomitable will of Ukrainian defenders. Their unwavering determination on the battlefield was unmatched, and their drive for victory in sports is inspiring and remarkable."
Ukraine has been participating in the Invictus Games since 2017 and has achieved notable success, winning 34 medals in the last competition held in 2023. The upcoming games present an opportunity for Ukrainian athletes to showcase their strength, resilience, and competitive spirit on an international stage.
