Tele2 Lithuania Completes 3G Switch Off
Tele2 Lithuania has officially completed the shutdown of its 3G mobile network, marking a significant step in the modernization of its telecommunications infrastructure. The carrier confirmed that retiring the legacy 3G service will facilitate enhancements to its 4G and 5G networks.
The retirement of the 3G network is aimed at optimizing Tele2's mobile network capabilities, allowing for improved performance and efficiency in 4G and 5G services. Dr. Evaldas Stankevičius, head of network planning and strategy at Tele2, stated, "By switching off the old-generation 3G connection, we reuse the frequencies assigned to it to improve the new-generation connection."
The switch-off will also help the company "optimize electricity costs." The transition to newer technologies is expected to reduce energy consumption while enhancing service quality. "Such a network operates much more efficiently if we compare the amount of energy required to transmit the same amount of information," Stankevičius added.
Following the completion of the 3G shutdown, Tele2 has already reported improvements in the speed of its 4G and 5G Internet services in various Lithuanian cities. This upgrade is part of the company's ongoing commitment to enhancing user experience.
Tele2 launched its 3G network in Lithuania 19 years ago and began phasing out the technology in March of the previous year. The decision to retire 3G aligns with a broader trend among mobile carriers worldwide, many of whom are transitioning away from older technologies to make way for more advanced networks.
Tele2 Lithuania is committed to continuing the modernization of its 4G network, having already deployed 1,572 base stations across the country. This expansion is crucial for supporting the growing demand for high-speed mobile data.
Tele2's Latvian subsidiary is also set to retire its 3G network this month, while the Estonian subsidiary has announced plans to phase out its 3G services by the end of this year. This coordinated effort across the Baltic region reflects a strategic move to enhance mobile connectivity and service quality.
As mobile carriers globally continue to phase out 3G networks, the spectrum previously used for 3G is being repurposed for 4G and 5G technologies, paving the way for faster and more reliable mobile communication. Tele2 Lithuania's completion of the 3G switch-off is a significant milestone in its journey toward a more modern and efficient telecommunications infrastructure.
