The Netherlands to Compete in the First Semi-Finals of the Eurovision Song Contest
The Netherlands is set to compete in the first semi-finals of this year’s Eurovision Song Festival, following a draw held in Basel, where the event will take place. Claude, the representative for the Netherlands, will perform in the second part of the first semi-finals, vying for a coveted spot in the finals.
Claude will face off against a diverse lineup of candidates from Azerbaijan, Albania, San Marino, Sweden, Belgium, Ukraine, Slovenia, Cyprus, Iceland, Estonia, Poland, Croatia, Portugal, Norway, and Latvia. A total of 10 spots are available for the finals, making the competition fierce among the 15 participating countries.
The second semi-finals will feature 15 countries competing for 10 places, which is one less than the first semi-finals. Notable countries in this round include Israel, Austria, Denmark, and Luxembourg. The first semi-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, while the second semi-final will take place two days later.
The semi-final draw is widely regarded as the official kickoff to the Eurovision song festival season. Traditionally, the mayor of the city that hosted the previous year’s event hands over the responsibility to the current host city before the draw takes place, symbolizing the continuity and excitement of the festival.
This year marks the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, with a total of 37 countries competing. Moldova was initially among the participants but withdrew from the event earlier this month.
In addition to the semi-finalists, six countries have already secured their spots in the finals: Switzerland (the previous year’s winner), Italy, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. These nations are part of the so-called “big five,” which are guaranteed a place in the finals due to their significant financial contributions to the event.
As the Netherlands prepares for its performance in the first semi-finals, anticipation builds for what promises to be an exciting Eurovision Song Festival. With a rich history of musical talent and a diverse array of competitors, this year’s contest is set to showcase the best of European music and culture. Fans around the world will be eagerly watching to see if Claude can secure a place in the finals and continue the Netherlands' legacy in this beloved competition.
