Traditional Council Criticises Painting of Azikiwe Sculpture in Onitsha
The Onitsha traditional council has expressed strong disapproval regarding the recent painting of the bronze sculpture of the late Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria's first president. Azikiwe, who was also the first to hold the title of Owelle Osowa Anya in Onitsha, is commemorated by this significant artwork.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Osita Anionwu, the council's chief of staff, articulated the council's concerns, emphasizing that the sculpture was not intended for painting. He stated that the application of paint has not only damaged the metal but has also altered the artist's original intent, undermining the aesthetic value of the piece.
“The Onitsha traditional council is appalled and deeply saddened by the recent painting of Professor Ben Enwonwu’s iconic bronze sculpture of The Rt. Honourable, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Owelle Osowa Anya Onicha, at the DMGS roundabout, Onitsha,” the statement read.
The council highlighted that this regrettable act reflects a blatant disregard for the artistic and cultural significance of the sculpture, as well as a lack of respect for the people of Onitsha. They stressed the importance of preserving the original intent and integrity of this masterpiece, urging relevant authorities to take immediate action to restore the sculpture to its original state.
“To properly rectify this error, experts who are specialized in the restoration of prized artworks should be consulted,” Anionwu added. He emphasized that this incident serves as a stark reminder of the necessity of seeking expert input and advice when dealing with cultural, artistic, and heritage treasures.
The traditional council also called for individuals in positions of authority to exercise humility and recognize the value of expert guidance in matters concerning cultural heritage. They demanded that those responsible for the act take accountability for their actions and work swiftly to restore the sculpture to its former glory.
This incident has sparked discussions about the importance of preserving cultural artifacts and respecting the artistic vision behind them, highlighting the need for greater awareness and sensitivity towards heritage sites and artworks.
