Tshisekedi Launches New Airline, Air Congo, to Revitalize DRC's Air Sector
President Félix Tshisekedi inaugurated Air Congo, the new national airline, during a ceremony at N'djili International Airport in Kinshasa. This initiative aims to enhance the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) air transport capabilities and improve connectivity between its provinces.
Air Congo is the result of a strategic partnership between the DRC, which holds 51% of the shares, and Ethiopian Airlines, which owns the remaining 49%. The airline's launch phase includes two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which are set to serve key Congolese cities such as Lubumbashi, Goma, Kisangani, Kolwezi, Kalemie, and Mbujimayi.
During the inauguration, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Jean-Pierre Bemba outlined the ambitious plans for Air Congo. He announced that the airline intends to expand its fleet by adding four more Boeing 737-800s within the next year, followed by an additional two aircraft of the same model in the subsequent two years.
The management team of Air Congo emphasized the advantages of this joint venture, which include the establishment of regular, secure, and punctual domestic flights, the training of flight personnel, the implementation of effective management practices, the enhancement of airport facilities, and the development of inter-provincial freight services.
The CEO of Ethiopian Airlines expressed confidence in the partnership, citing the success of similar collaborations with Togo and Malawi. He assured President Tshisekedi that these partnerships have yielded positive results and contribute to the advancement of the African aeronautical industry.
With the launch of Air Congo, the DRC aims to strengthen its air transport infrastructure, improve regional connectivity, and foster economic growth through enhanced mobility and trade. This initiative marks a pivotal step in the country's efforts to modernize its aviation sector and better serve its citizens and businesses.
