Windows 11 Setup Now Automatically Enables OneDrive Folder Backup
Microsoft has quietly altered the Windows 11 setup process to automatically enable OneDrive folder backup without informing users. During the initial setup, users encounter a screen titled "unlock your Microsoft experience," which emphasizes the benefits of using a Microsoft account. Skipping this sign-in process is nearly impossible, as Microsoft has made it challenging to install Windows 11 with a local account.
Once Windows 11 is installed, a notification in the Action Center often prompts users to back up their PC, which pertains to OneDrive. According to Neowin, new installations of Windows 11 now have OneDrive folder backup turned on by default. This means that the Desktop, Pictures, Documents, Music, and Videos directories are uploaded to the cloud automatically.
Why This Matters
The automatic backup feature could quickly fill up the 5GB free storage limit in OneDrive, causing confusion for users who might not understand why they are running out of space. This situation could lead non-tech-savvy users to consider subscribing to the Microsoft 365 plan, thinking it’s a necessary expense.
Microsoft has previously pushed OneDrive aggressively, including adding notifications in the Start Menu last year to encourage users to back up their files with OneDrive. These ads included a "start backup" button that would initiate the OneDrive setup process. There was also a brief test where users had to select a reason for quitting OneDrive, which was discontinued after user backlash.
Managing OneDrive Backup Settings
OneDrive is generally a good service, offering convenient cloud storage. However, the automatic backup feature can be annoying for those with a free account due to constant upgrade reminders. If you wish to opt out of OneDrive's folder backup, you can do so by:
-Opening OneDrive.
-Going to Settings.
-Selecting Sync and backup.
-Clicking on Manage Backup.
This allows you to turn off the backup for specific folders. Unfortunately, OneDrive does not currently allow users to select local folders for backup beyond the default user folders.
Future Implications
This automatic backup feature might become more significant with the release of Windows Recall to the stable channel of Windows 11, potentially leading to further complications.

Do You Use OneDrive?
OneDrive can be a useful tool, especially for those who need a reliable cloud storage solution. However, the automatic enablement of folder backup without user consent is a move that may frustrate many, particularly those unfamiliar with managing cloud storage settings.
