Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Pushes For Regulation For Political Party Registration
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is pushing for a legal framework requiring political parties to be officially registered, proposing an amendment to the Electoral Act. Currently, political parties simply inform ZEC of their existence without going through any formal registration process.
ZEC's chief elections officer, Utloile Silaigwana, stated that the recommendation for political party registration was one of the key outcomes of the post-2023 harmonised elections review conference held in Nyanga. The purpose of the conference was to reflect on the recent 2023 elections and to strategize for the 2028 electoral cycle, identifying areas of improvement.
Silaigwana explained that the recommendations aim to enhance both the legal and administrative frameworks governing elections in Zimbabwe. The call for regulation and registration of political parties is among these proposed changes, which could soon be incorporated into the country's electoral law.
He also urged Zimbabweans to move on from the 2023 election grievances and focus on the upcoming elections, encouraging those with complaints to seek solutions through appropriate channels like Parliament or the courts.
