Átoa Returns to Tunas Airwaves with "Ritinha"
Átoa is back on track, bringing a unique blend of modern pop and traditional musical elements to the airwaves. Following their release of Romance de Varanda in early March, a single and music video recorded with the Grupo Académico Seistetos, they have now unveiled a new song titled Ritinha. This track is also recorded with the same group, which has been recognized as one of the most popular Tunas Académicas in Évora since its founding in 1992.
A Fusion of Pop and Tradition
For the trio—composed of João Direitinho, Mário Monginho, and Tiago Teixeira—Ritinha represents "a pop song with a traditional DNA that travels between academic musicality and Alentejo roots." The song, inspired by an original piece by Sebastião Antunes, features lyrics and music by João Direitinho and Sebastião Antunes, production by Rodrigo Liaça, and mixing and mastering by João Barbosa. Barbosa also contributes as a musician, playing guitars alongside João Direitinho and Mário Monginho, who also plays mandolin, with Tomás Cartaxo and accordionist David Mendonça adding their talents.
The Story Behind "Ritinha"
According to the band, the music video for Ritinha—directed by Sebas Ferreira—captures a romantic misunderstanding. The narrative revolves around a phase where one is chasing someone who seems oblivious to their affection. As the band explains:
"Each one of us will have their own Ritinha, that girl who leaves her mark on us and who, no matter how much time passes, we never forget."
This blend of heartfelt lyrics, traditional melodies, and modern pop sensibilities makes Ritinha a standout addition to Átoa's repertoire, appealing to both longtime fans and new listeners.
Átoa’s dedication to intertwining modern pop with the rich traditions of academic and Alentejo music continues to set them apart. Their collaboration with Grupo Académico Seistetos enriches their sound, bringing a sense of authenticity and cultural depth to their music.
Ritinha is not just a song but a journey through the emotional landscapes of unrequited love and the timeless pursuit of a cherished individual. This release solidifies Átoa's position as a band that bridges the gap between contemporary and traditional Portuguese music, resonating with a diverse audience.
