Celebrate the Vltava: Prague’s Largest River Festival Unveiled
On September 22, in celebration of World Rivers Day, the Vltava River and its surroundings will host the inaugural multi-genre festival "Know the Vltava," the largest event of its kind in Europe. Stretching from the Podolská waterworks to the Old Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bubeneč, this festival promises an array of tours, artistic performances, workshops, and special programs for children along the embankment.
A Diverse Celebration
The festival will bring together over three dozen participants, highlighting the Vltava River's multifaceted significance—from its vital role in Prague's infrastructure and environmental impact to its cultural and sporting influences. Currently, 35 companies, organizations, and cultural institutions are involved in the preparations, with more than eighty activities planned.
Free and Educational
Organized by the municipal organization Kreativní Praha, in collaboration with the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Prague), the festival will offer most activities free of charge. The central theme revolves around education about the river and its conservation.
Exclusive Access and Tours
Visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore normally inaccessible areas. This includes the recently revealed supply tunnel system of the historic National Theater, which leads from the golden chapel to the Vltava River, and the Old Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bubeneč. Additionally, the century-old lock in Smíchov will be open for detailed guided tours of the Vltava Basin.
The program also features guided tours of permanent and current exhibitions at the Prague Waterworks Museum in Podolská vodárna, CAMP, and Rudolfinum, along with guided walks focusing on the history of Prague’s bridges.
Activities for All Ages
Children can participate in art workshops at the Rudolfinum Gallery and Troja Castle. The Forman Brothers Theater will present a special performance of "The Greek" tailored for the youngest festival-goers.
Interactive and Engaging Experiences
Festival attendees can enjoy sailboat rides, explore historic steamboats, and view cleaning trucks from Prague Services. Demonstrations by the integrated rescue system will also be part of the program. Moreover, festival boat transport between Holešovice and Bubeneč will be free of charge, adding convenience and an extra layer of enjoyment to the event.
