New Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the UN Presents Credentials
José Alberto Bríz Gutiérrez has officially taken on his role as the new Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the United Nations, presenting his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Before his current appointment, Mr. Bríz Gutiérrez served as Guatemala's Ambassador to the United Kingdom since 2021. His extensive diplomatic career includes serving as Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg from 2016 to 2021, as well as Head of the Mission to the European Union during that time. Prior to these roles, he was the Ambassador and Director General of International Multilateral and Economic Relations at Guatemala's Ministry of Foreign Relations from 2013 to 2016.
His experience at the Ministry of Foreign Relations also includes serving as Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN from 2002 to 2013 and as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Guatemala to the UN from 2001 to 2002. Additionally, he held positions as First Secretary and Consul at the Guatemalan Embassy in the United States in 2001, in Venezuela from 2000 to 2001, and in Costa Rica from 1998 to 2000.
Mr. Bríz Gutiérrez holds a master’s degree in European studies from Deusto University in Bilbao, Spain, and a bachelor’s degree in social and legal sciences from Francisco Marroquín University in Guatemala City. His extensive background in international relations and diplomacy positions him well to represent Guatemala on the global stage at the United Nations.
