Russian, UN diplomats discuss Syrian settlement in Moscow
Senior diplomats from Russia and the United Nations convened in Moscow on Thursday to engage in talks concerning the resolution of the Syrian crisis.
During the meeting, Sergey Vershinin, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, and Geir Pedersen, the UN's Special Envoy for Syria, held a comprehensive dialogue on the Syrian situation, with a primary focus on achieving a political settlement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement highlighting the in-depth discussion.
The statement emphasized the paramount importance of promoting a political process driven and implemented by the Syrian people themselves, with the backing of the UN. It underscored the significance of upholding the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR).
Furthermore, the two officials addressed prevailing humanitarian concerns, including the aftermath of the earthquake that occurred on February 6. The statement reiterated the urgent need to provide assistance to the Syrian people without discrimination, politicization, or preconditions, in accordance with the fundamental principles and norms of international humanitarian law.
