Some of our top culinary gems are hidden in the most unlikely destinations – tiny, out-of-the-way towns, where you might find yourself dining alongside half the local population.
Here are some of the best small town restaurants around the country.
Āpiti Tavern & Eatery, Manawatū


The tavern has been around since 1896, but in November 2020 it was taken over by two meat smoking masters – award-winning chef Grant Kitchen and national barbecue grand champion Jon James.
People now come from all over the North Island for a taste of their tender cuts – mouthwatering brisket burgers, juicy pork belly, and succulent smoked chicken, washed down with craft beers.
Redcliff Cafe, Te Anau

If you are planning on visiting the wonder that is Milford Sound, it is worth spending a night in the gateway town of Te Anau so you can dine at Redcliff Cafe.
Housed in a replica early settlers cottage and filled with trinkets and photos from years gone by, the restaurant serves up delicious meals with a strong local focus – think Stewart Island salmon, Fiordland venison, and even wild hare (which they cheekily describe as their version of “fast food”).
