Shane Jones Criticises Marae Protocol at Dame Tariana Turia’s Tangi
The tangi (funeral) for Dame Tariana Turia at Whangaehu Marae near Whanganui was a poignant occasion filled with heartfelt tributes, but it also sparked controversy regarding the marae's tikanga (protocol). Shane Jones, deputy leader of New Zealand First, publicly criticized the decision to restrict non-Māori speakers from addressing the gathering, which included several prominent dignitaries.
Jones expressed his frustration that three former prime ministers—Christopher Luxon, Sir Bill English, and Chris Hipkins—were unable to speak at the event. In a statement delivered in te reo Māori, he said, “Maranga e Tari, akona tō iwi, manaakitanga te manuhiri,” which translates to, “Tariana, rest no longer, arise and teach your people how to treat distinguished visitors.”
He argued that the adherence to this particular tikanga disrespected the dignitaries present and suggested that political motivations were influencing the decision. “It was disgraceful,” Jones told the NZ Herald. He emphasized that expressions of aroha (love) and sadness are universal, referencing that English had been spoken at the tangi for Kingi Tuheitia.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins, who attended the tangi, acknowledged the importance of being present and highlighted that Whānau Ora would be Dame Tariana Turia’s lasting legacy. Ex-National Prime Minister Sir Bill English praised Turia as “a brave politician” and commended her clarity and integrity, stating, “Tariana was absolutely clear about doing the right thing as she saw it, for Māori and for the country.”
Labour MP Willie Jackson referred to Turia as “the most influential Māori politician of this generation,” underscoring her significant impact on New Zealand politics.
In response to Jones' criticism, the marae declined to comment, as reported by the New Zealand Herald. The incident has sparked discussions about the balance between cultural protocols and inclusivity, particularly in significant gatherings that honor influential figures like Dame Tariana Turia.
