Sudanese-American writer Safia Elhillo’s novel Bright Red Fruit has been named a finalist for the young readers’ category of the 2024 Kirkus Prize. Bright Red Fruit, written in verse, tells the powerful story of a teenager navigating the slam poetry scene while facing the challenges of a complex new relationship that could derail her aspirations. The novel was praised by Kirkus Reviews as “a stunning work that deeply explores poetry, the complexities of identity, and the longing for love.”
Elhillo’s work is among six finalists in the young readers’ category. Kirkus editor-in-chief Tom Beer expressed that this year’s finalists reflect the best in fiction, nonfiction, and young readers’ titles, describing them as books that “speak to our time” and will have lasting impact.
The Kirkus Prize is recognized as one of the most prestigious literary awards globally, honoring exceptional works across fiction, nonfiction, and young readers’ literature. Each winner in the three categories will receive a $50,000 prize. The winners will be revealed during the Kirkus Prize ceremony on October 16, 2024.
