The Netherlands Ranks Second in Global Climate Policy Index
The Netherlands has emerged as a global leader in climate action, ranking second on the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) for 2024. The ranking, which evaluates countries based on CO2 emission reductions, sustainable energy expansion, and overall climate policies, places the Netherlands just behind Denmark, the top-performing country.
The CCPI, developed by the NewClimate Institute in collaboration with the Climate Action Network and Germanwatch, intentionally leaves the top three spots vacant, reserving them for countries that demonstrate "very high" performance across all evaluated areas. Currently, none of the 63 countries surveyed has met the stringent criteria required for a podium finish. Collectively, these nations account for 90 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The Netherlands has made remarkable progress in recent years, climbing from 29th place just four years ago to fifth place last year, and now to second place in the latest index. This upward trajectory highlights the country’s commitment to enhancing its climate policies and reducing its carbon footprint.
However, the researchers caution that despite the Netherlands' strong current performance, the new government is considering measures that could undermine these gains. Proposals to weaken or abolish certain initiatives, such as the netting scheme for solar power, have raised concerns among environmental advocates. While the climate goals set for 2030 and 2050 remain intact, there are doubts about the feasibility of achieving these targets, especially given the previous government's challenges in meeting them.
In stark contrast to the Netherlands' achievements, Iran has been ranked the lowest in the world for climate policies, with Saudi Arabia following closely behind. Other countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Russia, also find themselves among the lowest scorers in the index.
As the Netherlands continues to navigate its climate strategy, the focus will be on maintaining momentum and ensuring that proposed policy changes do not hinder progress toward a sustainable future. The global community will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold and what impact they may have on the country's climate commitments.
