Three Rotterdam primary schools closed today over threat of violent protest
Three primary schools in Rotterdam shut their doors on Wednesday following a threat of a "violent demonstration." The warning specifically mentioned the playground of the Dominicus Child Center on Noorderhaverkade. The Jenaplan school De Blijberg and Dalton school De Magriet, both located in the same complex, also remained closed, according to police confirmation to Rijnmond.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Dominicus Child Center announced it would close on Wednesday due to the threat, a decision made by the RVKO school board in consultation with the police. Later that evening, the school boards of De Margriet and De Blijberg also informed parents that their schools would not open on Wednesday.
Michelle Struick, director of primary education for the BOOR Foundation, which oversees both schools, wrote to parents, "Because our school is in the immediate vicinity of Dominicus, we consulted with the municipality and police. Even though the action is not expected to target our schools, we are choosing to err on the side of caution. To eliminate any risk, we are closing the school."
Police received an anonymous tip about the planned violent demonstration and are taking the threat "very seriously," a spokesperson said. Extra police patrols will monitor the area around the schools on Wednesday to ensure public safety.
