Tragic Incident in Spain: Suspected Gender-Based Violence Claims Two Lives
In a devastating occurrence, a man and a woman lost their lives in a destructive explosion that occurred in Orio, a town located in northern Spain. The Basque regional security department, on Tuesday, revealed that authorities are investigating the incident as a probable case of gender-based violence.
According to a spokesperson from the department, the explosion transpired at approximately 5:30 p.m. (1530 GMT) in this small fishing community of around 6,000 residents, situated near the French border. At present, there is no indication of any other individuals having sustained injuries during the incident.
Witnesses, as reported by Reuters, observed that the police had cordoned off the vicinity surrounding a bench on the sidewalk, where the blast had occurred. Adjacent to a children's playground, the area became the center of attention.
Several Spanish television channels aired an image allegedly captured at the scene, which depicted two lifeless bodies: one seated on the bench and the other lying on the pavement, both surrounded by a pool of blood. Interestingly, there were minimal signs of an explosion, as the bench, the shrubbery behind it, and a nearby bin seemed unaffected.
Inigo Urkullu, the head of the Basque region, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, referring to it as a "tragic event supposedly caused by gender-based violence." However, he refrained from providing further details. During a political rally, Urkullu requested a moment of silence to honor the victims, according to various local media sources.
Based on information obtained from police sources, news agency EFE reported that the initial investigation suggests that the explosion originated from a package held by one of the victims.
